Coming Soon: Anthem Studios

Years ago, I entertained a silly idea. Something too far out of reach. Something that would be possible in the realm of a wild reality that didn’t exist for me. But little things kept happening that pushed me to reconsider the possibility. Seeds were planted, and roots dug in that wouldn’t let go. I thought a lot about what it means to take risks that can push those silly ideas into that wild reality.

What emerged from those roots was the realization that there are always more reasons to say no, but better reasons to say yes. To chance it. To see how far you can go. To lay doubt and fear aside and just do the thing. And here we are after years of dreaming and planning, just weeks away from making it a solid, tangible reality. With the help of dozens of people, several circumstances that just happened to fall in my favor, and some kind of perfect timing, I’m about to open my own studio space in downtown Blue Springs.

In the spring of 2019, after a couple of years of searching – finding obstacles and road blocks in the three or four attempts we made to move forward – my husband Kyle and I found the perfect place. A building I’ve driven by several times. A building I’ve always thought of as the ugliest building in downtown Blue Springs.

In July, the ugliest building was ours. And we’ve spent the last six months pouring ourselves into it, making it a little less ugly every day. Even though we’ve handed the major stuff over to the professionals, it has been a LOT of work. That whole “blood, sweat, and tears” thing is completely accurate. But it’s been a 1:849:2 ratio of blood to sweat to tears (and half of the tears have been happy tears), so I’m quite satisfied with that.

It’s still several weeks from completion, but I’m seeing the transformation slowly take shape inside and out. What began as a boring and kinda sad little office building is slowly becoming the studio of my dreams.

BEFORE:

DEMO DAYS!

This process has required an enormous amount of support (in time, skills, sacrifices, faith, finances, and encouragement) from several people in my life, primarily my indescribably amazing husband, Kyle. He believes in nearly all the silly things I strive to do. And then he takes them into his hands and molds them into something better by his careful planning, his voice of reason, and his choice to allow my risk-taking to become his sacrifice. I know I would do the same for him. But I haven’t. Chasing my big dream means his big dreams are on hold. It’s a daily reminder of how full and immense his love is. I am the luckiest.

Stay tuned in the next few weeks (fingers crossed) to see the complete transformation. And, hey, if you need a super rad space for your next creative project or small workshop, I have the perfect place for you!

Nisha and Eric’s Maternity Session

For a while I was pretty sure that my brother Eric and his wife Nisha were the corporate-ladder-climbing couple who would spend their whole lives traveling every corner of the world, eating dinners at all the fancy restaurants, and always looking like they fell straight out of the pages of a style magazine. You know, doing all the things that people with young children rarely have the time or expendable income to accomplish.

But to my nearly-spitting-a-mouthful-of-food surprise, they announced at Thanksgiving dinner last year that they were expecting their first child. Aside from their good news that day, I was thankful that I didn’t do a spit-take in that moment. It was a close call.

I learned that day that I wasn’t wrong about who they are. But I was wrong in my assumption that their career accomplishments and lifestyle were the only goals and desires they had. Building a family is important to them too. I was wrong to think that those options are mutually exclusive. I think they’re simply the type of people who have figured out how to have it all, which is pretty incredible.

But pretty incredible things are to be expected from pretty incredible people.

For their maternity session, we explored an area in Blue Springs that has some very simple but very beautiful natural backgrounds just off a fairly busy road. I drive by this area all the time. I watch it transform from bare gray sticks and dead grass in the winter to vibrant pops of color in the fall. In the late spring, it’s lush green with tall grasses and kaleidoscopes of sunlight bouncing through the leaves. As most areas are, it’s gorgeous at sunset. And even more gorgeous with a beautiful couple on the verge of being a beautiful family…

Sierra | Blue Springs High School, Class of 2015

I first met Sierra toward the end of last year when she came to my studio for photos in her track and cross country gear. She is a natural model, so I had a great time working with her. I think we captured some nice, dramatic photos of her in the studio. Here’s one of my favorites:

After working with her in the studio, I knew her spring session would be awesome. I knew she’d make it easy on me because she’s easy-going, cooperative, and very photogenic. But my high expectations were completely surpassed. Seirra rocked her outdoor session from start to finish. Maybe it’s because we were already comfortable working together. Maybe it’s because we weren’t confined to the studio space. Maybe it’s because Sierra is absolutely gorgeous and glowing with personality, and I had more opportunities to capture her more of who she is this time around. Whatever it may have been, I’m thrilled with the outcome.

Blue Springs High School Athletes

A couple cool cats came to my studio recently to allow me to play with some interesting and dramatic lighting. Although studio photography has not always been a passion of mine (I will always have a love for interesting environments and the freedom of the outdoors), I’ve been enjoying the challenges of creating new looks and different moods with a variety of light modifiers that can’t often be used outdoors (as they require help from a few extra set of hands). My next step will be trying to find a couple helpers to assist me with taking interesting lighting scenarios outdoors. Look out, 2015! We’re going on a ride! And it’s going to be fun!

Many thanks to Sierra and Breyton for hanging out with me while we took some fun photos! I can’t wait to create more images like this for local high school athletes in the future.

Jane and Ron are Engaged

Hey, Old Man Winter! Thanks for toning down your angry chilliness for a second so Jane and Ron could get some fun outdoor engagement photos. I’ll admit, none of us would have survived the session without jumping into my car and blasting the heat between locations, but we had fun, and avoided frostbite, so I call that a win!jane and ron engagement-002jane and ron engagement-003jane and ron engagement-004jane and ron engagement-005jane and ron engagement-006jane and ron engagement-007jane and ron engagement-008jane and ron engagement-009 jane and ron engagement-011jane and ron engagement-012jane and ron engagement-016
