Tanya and Tracy | The Aspen Room at The Historic Stanley Event Space Wedding

My time with Tanya and Tracy actually began the day before their wedding. I spent Friday with Tanya, her bridesmaids, and many members of her family to document the haldi and henna ceremonies. It was colorful, exciting, and joyful. Full of life. Full of various textures, intricate details, and vibrant hues. Full of wonderful photo opportunities. My favorite part of the day was the application of the haldi. Each friend and family member spent a minute or two with Tanya and a tray of rice, flower petals, and haldi (specially prepared by Tanya’s mother and aunt). It was beautiful to see each person with Tanya as they prepared her for her wedding with this wonderfully fragrant tradition. So many smiles. So much laughter. And a few happy tears.

The day continued with the henna ceremony. What an amazing talent the henna artists have!

Now, the big wedding day!

As anyone who lives in Kansas City can tell you, the weather can be a bit temperamental. Tanya and Tracy’s wedding day was no exception. We had a cloudy day. A humid day. Some sprinkles. Some downpours. Some sunshine. All within a few hours. Going from Plan A to Plan B, back to Plan A, and “waiting it out” for group formals can be a little crazy, but the wedding party rolled with the changes quite nicely and we ended up being able to accomplish everything we wanted — and more!

Altogether, the wedding day was a beautiful blend to two different cultures. A day where tradition was honored, yet met with modern twists.  The result was a day full of colorful clothing, great music, delicious food, and one of the most beautiful cakes I’ve ever seen. It was a fantastic celebration made possible by the friends and family who came together (many of whom traveled hundreds or thousands of miles) to witness Tanya and Tracy’s vows, shower them with blessings, and dance the night away!

Jane and Ron are Engaged

Hey, Old Man Winter! Thanks for toning down your angry chilliness for a second so Jane and Ron could get some fun outdoor engagement photos. I’ll admit, none of us would have survived the session without jumping into my car and blasting the heat between locations, but we had fun, and avoided frostbite, so I call that a win!jane and ron engagement-002jane and ron engagement-003jane and ron engagement-004jane and ron engagement-005jane and ron engagement-006jane and ron engagement-007jane and ron engagement-008jane and ron engagement-009 jane and ron engagement-011jane and ron engagement-012jane and ron engagement-016

Jamie and Chip are Married

When I was in college back in 2004 or 2005, I bought a DSLR (some kind of Canon Rebel, if you must know). After years of shooting still life on my old film camera, I started taking pictures of people. One of the first paying jobs I had was taking family portraits for one of my mom’s co-workers – a wonderfully nice woman named Pam – and her three children, Annie, Andrew, and Chip. These wonderfully photogenic people became the focus of my first online portfolio, which contained approximately 20 photos. My portfolio has evolved considerably since I took their photos, and their family has as well. Annie, Andrew, and Chip are now adults. And last Saturday, Chip married a wonderful woman named Jamie.

This is the story of their day.

Rachel and Aaron are Engaged

I’ve shot some pretty fun engagement sessions in my day. They are typically among my favorite types of sessions to photograph because I get to interact with two people in love who are on the verge of dedicating their lives to one another. It’s a great chance to get to know couples prior to their wedding and to work with them without the (often) stressful time constraints of a wedding day.

So, even with the dozens and dozens of engagement shoots I’ve loved, this one is definitely among my favorites. The bright colors and the soft, even light, the great backgrounds, the bike, and most importantly, the lovely and photogenic couple who interacted so well with one another… everything came together perfectly.
