Nick’s Epic Senior Session | Downtown Kansas City Senior Photos

I’ve never sat down and counted the many factors that come into play for a successful photo session. There are dozens; I know that. A few of the most crucial are natural lighting angles, location access, weather, opportunities and abilities for off-camera lighting setup, my creative flow and vision for the shot, and the subject’s comfort level in front of the camera. I think of all these things like the sliders lined across a soundboard. On any given day, these sliders can be all over the place. Maybe we’ll have awesome light at an angle that doesn’t work with the direction of the wind. Maybe we’ll show up to a secluded location I thought no one else knew about, and find a handful of photo sessions taking place in all the good spots. Many of the variables are beyond my control, so I make adjustments as necessary to optimize the situation.

But with Nick’s senior portrait session, every slider on that metaphorical soundboard was dialed up to 11. He was an incredibly confident and stylish subject. He trusted my ideas. We had access to some unique locations as well as some public areas where we encountered not another human soul. We had a perfectly overcast day (my absolute favorite type of natural light) with the clouds breaking right at sunset, soaking the the Kansas City skyline with rich warm tones as the buildings lit up for the night. We had a couple incredibly hot cars to shoot with. It was epic, start to finish.

Taylor and Taylor’s Kansas City Engagement Session

Engagement photos often involve quite a bit of direction for the couple – having one of them turn their head slightly, asking one person to snuggle up on the other, etc. So knowing that this awesome couple is comprised of two Taylors, I needed a game plan for talking to each of them separately. Taylor (the man) told me that his friends call him “T Mo.” So he shall hereby be known as T Mo.

T Mo has been featured on the blog before, as I did head shots for him a couple of years ago. He was a great subject then, but as the old saying goes, two Taylors are better than one! Maybe that’s not the exact saying, but we’ll just go with it.

I met Taylor and T Mo (and their awesome dog, Ace) at Liberty Memorial yesterday evening so we could include a variety of backgrounds for their very Kansas City engagement session. They were simply wonderful to work with. They are both genuinely kind, fun, wonderful people. I hope they had as much fun with me as I had with them. We enjoyed gorgeous fall colors, incredible views, and even a shot or two inside Union Station. Add a touch of Royals pride, and you have all you need for a perfect session!

Carl’s Rainy Modeling Session | Kansas City Model Photographer

Carl is pursuing a career in fashion modeling. When he approached me to shoot, I knew his look would rock for a concept I’ve wanted to try for a while – using creative lighting (and a garden hose) to make some cool nighttime “rain” photos. I’d say he totally pulled it off!

His session left me wanting to focus more on creating unique and interesting setups like this for other session types: seniors, families, newlyweds, etc. So if you’re itching for some cool and different photos as well, let’s talk!

Paige and Jeff are Engaged!

I’ve said it before, and I don’t mind bragging by saying it again: I have awesome clients. The best anyone could ask for. Like Paige and Jeff, for example.

Their engagement session was incredibly enjoyable. They’re a fun, laid-back couple, which makes my job easy. It’s anything but work. But they had a hard time putting on their “serious faces” when I asked. I always enjoy the softer smiles from couples in love, but I soon realized that Paige and Jeff as individuals and as a couple are naturally full of life, laughter, and big smiles — the kind of stuff I soon realized I didn’t want them to tone down.

Happy goodness. Good happiness. Paige and Jeff!
